Gallon House Bridge - 100 Years
Wikipedia indicates fifty covered bridges remain Oregon. The Gallon House Bridge is listed as Oregon's oldest covered bridge in continuous use. It was built in 1916 and, owing to multiple repairs/renovations through the decades, remains operative to this day.
The name Gallon House was owing to the bridge's use as a quot;pigeon dropquot; for liquor at the north entrance. Operators at a liquor dispensary nearby sold whiskey by the gallon to Silverton residents. At the time, Silverton, which had jurisdiction of the south side of the bridge, was quot;dry, quot; not allowing liquor to be sold in town.
