Stonehenge on the Columbia

There is a Stonehenge in North America. - - It sits on a prominence above the Columbia River just over a hundred miles east of Portland, Oregon.

This full scale replica was erected as a WWI memorial and dedicated in 1918 to the servicemen of Klickitat County, Washington who died in the Great War. The design and construction of this massive structure was paid for by the local wealthy entrepreneur, Sam Hill. Guided by leading authorities on archaeology, astronomy, and engineering, Hill combined their knowledge to duplicate, as nearly as possible, the original size and design of the ancient Neolithic ruin in England.
