This is the "hidden stairwell" at Villa Farnese in Caprarola, Italy. Villa Farnese was built by Cardinal Farnese in 1559 through 1573. Almost everyone ascended the five floors of the massive villa using an ornate fescoed grand stairway that had been built to impress. But, the Cardinal had this private "hidden stairwell" that provided a direct and unseen exit from his office and personal quarters.
