The citizens in northeast Spain, including Barcelona, identify themselves as Catalonia (also Catalona or Catalunya). They have arranged for a referendum to be conducted next year on whether they should secede or not from Spain. No one seems to know how this would work, especially with the EU. Meanwhile, there are rallies, speechifying, flag displaying and graffiti everywhere in support of secession. This huge rally was happening at Plaza de Catalunya, a large plaza in the heart of the city.
