Day 16: Villa Farnese
We took a day trip today to see the Villa Farnese, considered one of finest examples of Renaissance architecture. The massive structure was built as a family home of Cardinal Farnese in 1559 through 1573. Grandson of Pope Paul III and elevated himself to the position of Cardinal at the age of 14, Alessandro Farnese obtained vast wealth and influence by which he was able to erect a huge masterpiece of art for a home.br/ br/ Villa Farnese has five floors and the walls ceilings and dome are meticulously frescoed. It is a truly amazing site.br/ br/ This photo shows the top steps and dome of the grand spiral staircase connecting the first three floors.
