Day 9: Etruscan Tunnel

Widened in the 1930's this tunnel under Civita was originally built by the Etruscans. It crosses beneath the entire town and, in its day, permitted continued access to an east-west "road" as was the Etruscan community design. Presently, it is technically closed off to foot traffic. There were signs - but, we couldn't read them ;-) We walked through the tunnel anyway ... only to get stopped from a longer hike by a steep hillside thickly covered in brambles. We returned and celebrated the adventure Etruscan-style ... with local wine.
