Day 12: The Lower Levels

Our residence at the Civita Institute is a typical structure for the small town of Civita. It was probably built about 500 years ago - modified, of course, over the centuries as technology and infrastructure matured. It now has plumbing, electricity, hot water and, of course, wifi.br/ br/ Our bedroom is in a loft originally built to hold animal feed and other stores. The quot;lower levelquot; where we are staying is the kitchen (and my quot;officequot; for processing photos). Below that is a restaurant, Civita's best, called the Alma Civita (see: a href="http://www.almacivita.com/en/"; target="_self"http://www.almacivita.com/en//a). But, the lower levels do not stop there.br/ br/ Long before the current town was built, the Etruscans lived here. And they carved elaborate quot;cavesquot; into the soft quot;tufo stone.quot; At Alma Civita one can dine in one of these quot;caves.quot; Very cool. But, there is even a lower level dug deeper into the earth ... and this is used by Alma Civita for wine storage...br/ br/ This photo shows the stairway to the very lowest level of the building in which we are living. The steps were carved by Etruscans over 2,000 years ago.
