Plate Tectonics
Iceland exists owing to ongoing volcanic activity caused by a gradual separation of the European and Atlantic tectonic plates on the earth's crust. There is surface evidence of this separation at Pingvellir. The trench shown in this photo is the surface manifestation of the plate separation going on below.
